It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Murray Sidaway over the weekend.
Murray was a dedicated, long-standing employee of CentrePort, having recently completed over 40 years of service. He was an experienced Crane Operator, Straddle Driver & Vessel Planner, a loyal Union Delegate, as well as a trainer and mentor to many at CentrePort.
Murray’s passing was unexpected, and we are all reeling from this loss. We will feel his absence greatly.
Our thoughts are with Murray’s family at this time. They have asked that we pass on the below details to you, and to let you know that you are welcome to attend.
- Thursday 31 October (after 1700hrs)
- Poroporoaki (to celebrate his life/ share some yarns and stories with the family)

- Friday 1 November, at 1000hrs
- Funeral

- Please note that following the funeral, the burial has been reserved for family only and as such, Murray’s family have asked for this to be respected.
We all respond to news like this in different ways, so please make sure you check in on your colleagues and give people space to manage how they are feeling.
Our Ferries, Our Future
Finance Minister Nicola Willis wants to replace rail-enabled publicly owned interisland ferries with ones that don’t carry rail freight and are owned and operated with some kind of privatisation.
We urgently need to tell her and her government’s coalition partners that the only option we will accept are publicly owned ferries that are rail-enabled.
They are our ferries. This is our future.

The loss of a New Zealand operated coastal freighter and up to 40 jobs (including 14 seafarers) due to the economic downturn threatens the viability and resilience of our supply chain.
Swire Shipping, the owners of Pacifica Shipping, have advised its second New Zealand coastal freighter Takutai Chief will be removed from service soon after a downturn in trade.

Thousands of job losses. Rolling attacks on Te Tiriti o Waitangi. No-cause evictions and selling off public housing. Cuts to our public transport, health and education. It is clear – this government has waged economic war on everyday people in Aotearoa.
Their approach isn’t new. Taking from our collective pool to line the pockets of private interests is a tried and true method of moving resources away from our communities and forcing more and more of the basics of life into businesses to be profited from. It puts profits over people, and our living world. For what?
We are calling on communities based in Te Whānganui-a-Tara to hit the streets and rally together Saturday 8th June to say NO to the cuts, and unify our voices for a future where everyone has what they need to thrive.
Through a vision for an Aotearoa that is fair and flourishing, where Te Tiriti o Waitangi is honoured properly, and for an economic system therefore that puts the wellbeing of people and our planet above corporate profit- we can unify, act, and build toward real change. Now is the time to act together.
